Sven and his wife Kerstin arrived in California from Sweden in 1959. With few prospects the couple was on SEATTLE. For most of the last decade, the Ellstrom team was battling with Oh Boy! Oberto to be the top hydroplane in the H1 Unlimited Fleet. Now the Ballard-based Ellstrom team, which has competed Scott & Shannon Raney, long-time veterans of Unlimited Hydroplane Racing, formed their own H1 Unlimited Race team in 2011. After breaking into hydroplane racing sweeping floors and doing odd jobs for Bill Wurster’s U-8 team, then moving up to crew member and finally Crew Chief, Scott Raney has notched multiple victories in the Unlimited ranks.

In 1996 the Ellstrom family opened a 50,000-square foot plant in Algona, WA, to manufacture the new flooring. A few years later Formica Corporation purchased STEL The family’s entry into the high speed sport of Unlimited Hydroplane Racing as a sponsor in 1994 led to the construction of their own boat, Miss Elam Plus , a year later and the start of the very successful Ellstrom Racing Team.
